SEO WordPress in Morocco: technical & content checklist (without touching the design)

By Mohamed Acharki 4 min read

Many Moroccan SMEs assume SEO WordPress starts with a new theme or a redesign. More often Google is blocked by permalinks, indexing, titles, media, internal links, and a few base settings.

This SEO WordPress Morocco checklist covers technique and content on a site already live. It does not replace the SEO consulting service page (strategy and measurement) and it is not a deep Core Web Vitals guide — see Core Web Vitals on WordPress in Morocco  and see the English CWV guide.  Goal: fix foundations without breaking theme, menus, or design.

French twin: SEO WordPress Maroc. Same framework, written for English readers (international teams and Morocco businesses that plan in English) — not a dump translation.

In short: useful SEO WordPress Morocco work starts with a crawlable, indexable site, clear page intent, coherent metadata, clean images, meaningful internal links, and correct hreflang when the site is bilingual.

1. A checklist — not a redesign

Changing theme, header, or “modernising” the site is not an SEO prerequisite. If the design already converts (calls, WhatsApp, forms), protect it. Foundations live in WordPress: settings, metadata, URLs, content, and internal links. No checklist guarantees a Google position; measure impressions, clicks, and leads.

Building or rebuilding from scratch is a different job: WordPress websites Casablanca / création de site web.

2. Permalinks and URL architecture

  • Prefer readable, stable URLs based on the publication title.
  • Do not change an indexed structure without 301 redirects.
  • One page = one intent = one URL; check HTTPS, trailing slash, canonical without UTM, short slugs.

3. Yoast SEO or Rank Math: the basics

Yoast or Rank Math helps structure metadata; the plugin score is not a Google ranking. Pick one plugin and configure it properly.

Setting Goal
Title & meta by type Avoid duplicated templates
XML sitemap One source of truth
Canonical One primary version
Indexing Index useful pages
  1. One unique SEO title aligned with intent.
  2. A useful meta description — no stuffing.
  3. One H1, clear H2/H3 hierarchy, stable URL.
  4. Real CTAs and proof — no invented metrics.

4. Indexing: Google must be able to read

  1. Settings → Reading: do not discourage search engines on production.
  2. Check robots.txt: no accidental Disallow: /, no blocking critical CSS/JS.
  3. Submit the sitemap in Search Console; watch the Pages report.
  4. Fix 404s, soft 404s, redirect chains, important discovered-not-indexed URLs.
  5. Link orphan content from pillar pages.

Thin archives, thin tags, test pages, and internal search are often candidates to rationalise or noindex.

5. Media: weight, alt, file names

  • Compress images; WebP or AVIF when possible.
  • Match display size; do not load a 5000 px hero without reason.
  • Descriptive alt when the image carries meaning; empty if decorative.
  • Readable names, e.g. clinic-reception-casablanca.webp.

6. Internal linking: pass meaning

Internal linking is a safe lever that needs no design change.

  1. From home and service pages, link to pages that sell and to guides.
  2. From articles, point to the SEO hub, related guides, and the free audit (FR: audit gratuit).
  3. Natural, descriptive anchors — no artificial repetition.
  4. Keep important content reachable: no dead silos, no orphans.

For local acquisition, keep NAP consistent and see local citations Morocco.

7. Bilingual FR / EN: hreflang

  1. One URL per language (Polylang, WPML, or your setup).
  2. Reciprocal hreflang, with x-default when relevant.
  3. Content adapted to local vs international intent — not only translated.
  4. Correct sitemap and a working language switcher.

8. Security, updates, hygiene

  • Update core, themes, and plugins — staging first when possible.
  • Remove unused extensions; limit admin roles.
  • Test backups, SSL, and anti-spam forms.
  • Watch Search Console for security alerts and spam.

9. What not to break

Protect theme and builder, main menus, header/footer, forms, tracking, and Ads landings. If performance forces a heavy change: measure → fix → retest. Do not replace the whole design out of panic. Speed deep-dive: Core Web Vitals WordPress Maroc.

10. Recommended order of work for an SME

  1. Indexing and robots.
  2. Permalinks, canonicals, HTTPS.
  3. Titles, H1s, and metas on commercial pages.
  4. Internal links and critical media.
  5. Hygiene, updates, backups.
  6. Multilingual/hreflang if applicable, then speed on important URLs.

FAQ

Yoast or Rank Math? Both are enough for titles, metas, sitemap, indexing. Configure one; the score is not a Google position.

Must I change theme? Not if it is maintained, reasonably performant, and converting. Prioritise indexing, content, linking, media, hygiene.

How long before results? Technical fixes can show early; commercial visibility builds over months. See délai des résultats SEO au Maroc.

Bilingual site — where to start? Stabilise one language, then verify per-language URLs, reciprocal hreflang, and adapted content. Do not break the switcher.

Conclusion: checklist first, design later

SEO WordPress in Morocco does not require breaking what already works. Stable permalinks, Yoast or Rank Math configured, healthy indexing, clean media, useful internal links, hreflang if bilingual, updates and security: start with foundations.
